We live in an increasingly global world. People and technology are proliferating at an explosive rate and our global world is becoming more and more accessible. As we near the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, it has become increasingly apparent just how diverse in its citizens and visitors the United States has become. Yet, cultural ignorance abounds and we continue to live in a society plagued by prejudices, discrimination and the stereotyping of various groups of peoples based on their race, religion, sexual preference, citizenship and socio-economic status.
If we are to have even the slightest impact on this cultural ignorance that pervades our society, we must provide a multicultural education that equips children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for functioning in a pluralistic society. In this 21st Century and beyond it is imperative that students possess a working knowledge of various belief systems, customs, foreign languages and cultural and geographical awareness.
